New thing on here. A mini-series - if you will.
Let’s call it PICTURES. As in moving pictures. 🎥
Love promo music videos. Always have. Especially ones from the 80s and 90s when they really took off in a big way, following the dawn of MTV and the opening explosions of the hyper-corporatised marketing and PR of the global music industry.
A nice counter-product of that was the emergence of lots of colourful and creative visual accompaniments to artists’ work. Even reasonably small-scale and niche ones, by today’s standards.
These promo videos often providing another insight into another dimension of their creativity and/or the creativity of the artists, animators, directors and visual visionaries they worked with on them.
The weirder and more unusual the better on the music video front for me, unsurprisingly.
Going to start posting one or two favourites a month on here, with a short blurb.
First up…
PICTURES #1 - JESSE RAE - OVER THE SEA
Just like the claymore flying free. Straight outta the Borders. A super-singular and beyond idiosyncratic genius, Jesse Rae with Over The Sea.
Jesse is an absolute, out-and-out legend, to say the least. Responsible for famously penning Inside Out for Odyssey and loads of other insanely great production works and collabs with the likes of Roger Troutman of Zapp, Bernie Worrell and the gang from Parliament Funkadelic and other such top tier American funk luminaries, as well as working with the incredible Adrian Sherwood and On-U Sound in the UK… and others.
Cutting it with real illustrious, musical royalty - as standard. And doing it his way. Does not get the credit he deserves.
Shot in the Highlands of Scotland and NYC - symbolising the nature of his musical vision - and including some stunning shots where Jesse and his band are performing (and swinging a massive sword about) on top of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Absolutely mental. Does anyone I know on here have a background in Health & Safety? Would love to get my hands on the pre-production Risk Assessment.
Might be wrong, but I believe the girl in the video is Jesse’s wife too. Cute.
Chatted back-and-forth with Jesse for a while, a while back, about a possible interview. Must strike that back up again. That’s all, folks but more soon, folks…
