Almost time up on 2024. Do you think we should just call it a night now in December?
Weird year.
Lots of horrifying and unnecessary injustice, malevolence, pain and suffering on the macro and the micro - mostly driven by the power hungry, hateful, greedy, divisive and destructive (at all costs) nature of large swathes of the human species. We still have a long way to go.
But… on the more positive side. For me anyway… Lots of amazing memories. And lots of truly amazing music. What more have you got when you think about it, really?
Here’s a rundown of personal fave brand new musical bits of 2024, on everyone’s fave streaming platform of choice. Scaled back and reigned in, to just the 300-400 odd tunes…
The playlist is in order of when the tracks were discovered and added rather than in any sort of preference or priority.
Top 6 tracks of year for me (had 5 then remembered another stand-out) would be:
Chaz Jankel & Michael Messer - Music Brings Us Close Together
Jack J - Wrong Again
Totem Projects - Dream Forever
Discovery Zone - Pair A Dice
Kurtiss - Rent Is Too Damn High
Charlotte & Reinhard - Sins & Virtues
Overall 2024 has been just a RIDICULOUSLY good year for quality tuneage. Fresh new productions and next level creativity and magic pouring out from around the world and across the musical sphere. Head blown on pretty much a weekly basis. Way more than I could get round to playing on my radio show.
All sorts of flavour palettes are catered for here but a Spicy Crisis vibe throughout the selections, I guess.
If you can, when you can, from time to time:
Support new music. Buy the odd release, go to the odd gig, night, festival, event, buy the odd T-shirt. Share what you like and spread it around. Might not feel like the most important thing sometimes but music is definitely one thing that has an amazing ability to bring a bit of positivity and light into life. Certainly makes everything brighter. Can you imagine the world without it?
And artists need support more than ever before.
Hope someone finds something they might like… Never offended if not.
